High-end painting for North London homes

We paint and decorate family houses, period townhouses and large flats across Hampstead, Highgate, Regent's Park, Belsize Park and the streets around them. If you searched for luxury painters or a private painter for your home, this is the work we mean: careful preparation, fine finishes, and a fixed price in writing after a free survey. 15 years in the trade, and the company carries £4 million of public liability cover.

What high-end means in practice

It is not a different paint. Trade-grade Dulux, Crown and Johnstone's give a very good result when the surface underneath is right. The difference is the time spent before the first coat goes on.

We rake out and fill cracks, stabilise old plaster, and sand woodwork back until the surface is true under your hand, not just under a coat of paint. Then we prime, and build the finish in thin coats that cure properly between visits. Skirtings, architraves, cornicing and panelled doors are cut in by hand rather than rolled past. It is slower, and it is what keeps a line crisp in raking light from a tall window.

Finishes and colour

Colour and sheen are decided together. A deep colour in a flat matt reads differently from the same colour in eggshell, and woodwork usually wants a different sheen from the wall beside it. We specify both for every room so the house hangs together.

We use Farrow & Ball where a scheme calls for it, and can plan the whole palette first through a colour consultation. If you are weighing the ranges, our comparison of Farrow & Ball, Dulux Heritage and Little Greene sets out the differences. For smooth, brush-free finishes on doors, units and joinery, see spray painting and kitchen cabinet painting.

Period houses and original detail

Much of the North London housing stock is Victorian, Edwardian or Georgian, with high ceilings, deep cornicing, ceiling roses, picture rails and timber box sashes. Those features are the reason people buy these houses, and thick, careless paint buries them. We keep them sharp.

The full approach, including breathable coatings for old masonry and what we do on listed and conservation-area properties, is on our heritage and period property painting page. Original windows are covered under sash window painting, and failing plaster is dealt with before painting through our plastering service.

Working in a home you live in

Most of this work happens while someone is living in the house. Before we start we agree the order of rooms, what can stay and what needs moving, and how long each room will be out of use. Floors and furniture are protected, and we clear up at the end of each day.

You get one fixed price in writing after the survey. If something turns up behind a wall that changes the job, we tell you before we do anything about it, with the cost, not after.

Where we do this work

We cover Camden and North London, and most of the high-end work sits in six neighbourhoods.

Painters and decorators in Hampstead for large Victorian and Edwardian family houses and period conversions.

Painters and decorators in Highgate for villas and family houses on conservation streets.

Painters and decorators in Regent's Park for Nash stucco terraces and period townhouses around the park.

Painters and decorators in Belsize Park for stuccoed terraces and large villas split into apartments.

Painters and decorators in St John's Wood for detached and semi-detached villas with tall reception rooms.

Painters and decorators in Primrose Hill for stucco-fronted terraces and townhouses with ornate interior detail.

High-end painting: common questions

What makes a painter high-end?

Mostly what you do not see on the day it is finished. The preparation is slow and thorough, filling and sanding until the surface is true, then priming, then thin coats that cure properly. The detail is cut in by hand, the room is left clean, and the price is fixed in writing before any work starts. The paint is the smaller part of the difference.

Do you work in occupied family homes?

Yes, most of our work is in homes people are living in. We agree the order of rooms with you beforehand, protect floors and furniture, and clear up at the end of each day. If a room needs to be empty while it dries, we plan that into the programme so you are not surprised by it.

How much does a high-end paint job cost?

There is no separate rate for it. After a free survey we give you one fixed price in writing. What moves the price is the size of the house, the condition of the plaster and woodwork, how much detail there is to cut in by hand, and the finishes you choose. We do not quote over the phone, because it would be a guess.

Can you match a specific colour or a Farrow & Ball scheme?

Yes. We work with trade-grade Dulux, Crown and Johnstone's, and with Farrow & Ball where the scheme calls for it. If you have not settled the colours, our colour consultation plans the palette and sheen levels room by room before painting starts.

Are you insured?

Yes. The company carries £4 million of public liability cover. We hold no trade accreditation, and we would rather say that than imply one.

How far ahead do I need to book?

It depends on the season and the size of the job. Tell us the date you need the house finished by when you get in touch, and we will say honestly whether we can meet it. We would rather move a start date than rush the preparation.
